IZT Direction Finding at Port of Rotterdam

IZT has successfully commissioned a state of the art Radio Direction Finding (RDF) sensor for the Port of Rotterdam (PoR), further strengthening one of the world’s busiest and most technologically advanced maritime traffic management infrastructures.
The deployment of multiple IZT DF5000-9 Radio Direction Finder sensors enhances the ability of the harbor master to accurately locate and track vessels entering and leaving the Port of Rotterdam, which spans more than 40 kilometers from east to west.
Seamless Integration into Vessel Traffic Systems
Fully integrated within the Tidalis Vessel Traffic System (VTS) and the existing coastal radar infrastructure, the IZT DF5000-9 delivers highly accurate Lines of Bearing (LoB) based on IZT proven Correlative Interferometer (CI) technology. The system continuously processes radio transmissions across all relevant IALA maritime VHF communication channels, providing real-time bearing data directly to the VTS for enhanced situational awareness and decision support.

- Simultaneous monitoring of all operational IALA VTS communication channels
- Continuous streaming of approximately 100 Lines of Bearing (LoB) per second to the Tidalis VTS

- Continuous surveillance of both offshore approaches and port traffic
- Reliable RDF triangulation over distances of up to 30 nautical miles

Engineered for Reliability
The RDF sensors were installed and commissioned by Port of Rotterdam personnel under the supervision of IZT. Prior to system deployment, comprehensive field trials were conducted to validate system performance under operational conditions.
To ensure long-term operational independence, IZT provided hands-on technical training covering routine maintenance and service procedures for the distributed RDF sites along the coastline.
Specifically designed for harsh maritime environments, the IZT DF5000-9 antenna array features a fully detachable construction, enabling transportation and installation even at locations requiring manual handling. The robust antenna structure is engineered to withstand wind speeds of up to 150 km/h, while the complete RDF system is designed for 24/7 continuous operation, 365 days a year, requiring only minimal maintenance thanks to integrated remote Go/No-Go diagnostic capabilities.
